This week in the Senedd, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on the Welsh Government to improve the support offered to victims of domestic abuse.

According to a recent report, an estimated 1.6 million women aged between 16-74 in England and Wales have experienced domestic abuse.

The Welsh Lib Dems have criticised the Welsh Government for failing to address a lack of support services for victims, particularly children who have witnessed instances of abuse or violence.

Commenting, the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“As part of my role on the ESJ Committee, I was honoured to hear from an advisory group made up of courageous survivors of gender-based violence who shared with us their experiences.

Their invaluable first-hand insight and expertise painted a picture of a support system that is quite frankly not fit for purpose.

Most crucially, we have learnt the egregious lack of trust survivors have in a justice system that has routinely failed them.

It is of the utmost importance that we are prioritising the victims and survivors of this truly horrific crime.

The Welsh Government must listen to victims and act accordingly to fix these gaping holes, before any more of our most vulnerable slip through the cracks.”
