Labour accused of “complacency” after rejecting Welsh Affairs Committee calls for annual report on investment in Wales

Responding to the UK Labour Government rejecting calls from the Welsh Affairs Select Committee for an annual report on inward investment in Wales, Welsh Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson David Chadwick said:

“Labour refusing to provide the basic information needed to understand where Wales is succeeding and where we are being left behind economically shows they have learnt nothing from their defeat in May.

“This was a straightforward and sensible recommendation from the Welsh Affairs Committee. A Wales-specific annual report would tell us what investment is coming in, where it is going, what jobs it is creating and how we compare with the rest of the UK. Labour’s refusal to provide that transparency smacks of complacency.

“For too long Wales has suffered from sluggish growth, low productivity and a lack of high-value investment. After decades of Labour-led governments in Cardiff and now a Labour Government in Westminster, people in Wales deserve far more ambition than this.

“You cannot fix Wales’ economic problems if you are not even willing to properly measure them. Labour should stop making excuses, publish the data and give businesses and policymakers the information they need to bring more high-quality investment and well-paid jobs to Wales.”
