Lib Dems Criticise Welsh Labour MPs for Nodding through unsuitable ‘Zombie Bill’ on Welfare

Responding to 25 Welsh Labour MPs voting through the Government’s Welfare Bill, Welsh Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson David Chadwick MP said:

“The shambles we have seen from Labour show a government that’s lost control. We’ve seen the Bill today dismembered before our eyes; this is no way to govern a country. This failed bill should be scrapped altogether.

“Welsh Labour MPs who backed the proposals to cut support for some of the most vulnerable in our country will need to explain why they have done so to the people of Wales.

“The Liberal Democrats will continue to oppose any attacks on disabled people by this Government.”

On the general contents of the bill that were voted on, Welsh Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson David Chadwick MP added:

"Personal Independence Payments are not a luxury, they are a lifeline that help disabled people live independently and stay in work. By voting these changes through, Welsh Labour MPs have chosen to withdraw vital support from vulnerable people.

“Wales, with higher rates of long-term illness, will be among the hardest hit. Far from fixing issues, the Labour government’s changes to the bill simply create a two-tier system for disabled people.

“If the Government were serious about tackling the growing welfare bill, they would be focusing on solving the root causes of chronic ill-health, with hundreds of thousands of people in Wales stuck on NHS waiting lists.”
