Responding to the news that Tata Steel has announced five-week stoppages at key Welsh operations, Welsh Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson David Chadwick MP said:

“Today’s announcement underlines the urgent need for the UK Government to secure a deal with the EU that protects Welsh steel from damaging tariffs. Without such an agreement, the future of our steel industry is at serious risk.

“The threat of devastating tariffs is exactly why the Liberal Democrats have consistently called for a new customs union with the EU. Labour must act now to deliver this, rather than continue to bury its head in the sand.

“We also urgently need to see the details of Labour’s long-promised Steel Strategy, particularly how it plans to address the crippling energy costs faced by heavy industry. The sector cannot afford further delays while jobs and communities hang in the balance.”
