Local MP for Brecon, Radnor and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick has formally opened Ystradgynlais’ new permanent banking hub today after a successful 3-year campaign by the Welsh Liberal Democrats to see a hub open in the town.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats launched their campaign for a banking hub in 2023, when the town's last bank, Lloyds, announced it was closing its branch despite record-breaking profits.

Following public meetings in the town by David Chadwick MP and Jane Dodds MS and unsuccessful attempts to force Lloyds to keep the branch open, David Chadwick submitted an application to LINK, the agency responsible for the rolling out of banking hubs across the UK.

Although the initial application was turned down by LINK, David Chadwick launched an appeal, disputing some of the data used by LINK and gathering testimonies and evidence from local businesses, clubs and organisations to build a stronger case, also bringing LINK representatives to the town to demonstrate first-hand why the banking hub was needed.

Following the successful appeal by David Chadwick, a temporary banking hub opened in May this year, and today a permanent hub has opened at 14 Commercial Street, Ystradgynlais, Swansea, SA9 1HD.

The hub will be open Mon - Fri 9.00am - 5.00pm and will have representatives from the following banks on the following days Monday: Barclays Tuesday: No Community banker confirmed yet, Wednesday: Lloyds Thursday: HSBC, Friday: Halifax.

Commenting at the opening, David Chadwick MP said:

“This is fantastic news for Ystradgynlais. After months of pressure, rejected applications and persistent campaigning, including personally showing the Banking Hub regulator around our vibrant town, I’m delighted that the Liberal Democrats have been able to secure a permanent, long-term Hub opening on Commercial Street.

“I launched this campaign to make sure communities like Ystradgynlais and the surrounding area aren’t cut off from essential services. Securing a permanent Banking Hub is a major step in ensuring our towns remain supported, connected and able to thrive.

“I will continue pushing to ensure that facilities like this remain protected and that no community in our area is left behind.”

Also welcoming the news, local Welsh Liberal Democrat Senedd Member Jane Dodds said:

“The opening of this permanent Banking Hub is a huge victory for the people of Ystradgynlais and I’m glad the Welsh Lib Dems were able to spearhead this campaign to secure a major win for the town.

“Access to banking is not a luxury; it is a necessity, particularly for older residents, small businesses, and those who rely on cash. This Hub will make a real and lasting difference to the community.”
