Reform Accused of Censorship and Free Speech Hypocrisy After Journalists Blocked from Manifesto Launch

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have accused Reform of blatant censorship and rank hypocrisy after a journalist was reportedly blocked from attending the party’s manifesto launch despite repeated requests.

Welsh political journalist Will Hayward revealed he had not been allowed to attend Reform’s manifesto launch, even though he had attended and questioned the leaders of Plaid Cymru, Welsh Labour and the Welsh Conservatives at their campaign events in the same week.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats said the decision exposes Reform’s claims to support free speech as completely hollow and raises serious concerns about how the party treats scrutiny and democratic accountability.

The party highlighted the stark contradiction between Reform’s rhetoric and its actions. Only weeks earlier, Reform figures threatened to withdraw funding from Bangor University after some students declined to participate in a political event with them, claiming they were defending free speech.

Reform politicians regularly present themselves as champions of free speech, yet Welsh Liberal Democrats say their behaviour increasingly shows the opposite.

Reform-led councils have already faced criticism for blocking journalists from reporting from council meetings, fuelling concerns about a growing pattern of hostility towards legitimate scrutiny from the press.

Welsh Liberal Democrats warned that preventing journalists from attending campaign events is not just hypocritical but represents a deeply worrying attack on transparency and democratic accountability.

They said that if Reform is already trying to silence journalists while in opposition, voters should be deeply concerned about what the party would do with the full power of government behind it.

Commenting, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds MS said:

“Reform love to posture as defenders of free speech, but the moment a journalist might ask difficult questions, they resort to censorship. Its not free speech if you only allow those that agree with you to talk, ask questions or take part.

“Just weeks ago, they were threatening to 'defund' Bangor University in the name of ‘free speech’, yet now they are blocking journalists from attending their own manifesto launch. That is staggering hypocrisy.

“This isn’t about free speech at all, it’s about control. Reform wants the freedom to say whatever they like without being challenged, while trying to silence anyone who might hold them to account.

“If Reform is already trying to shut down scrutiny while they are still in opposition, people should be very worried about how they would behave if they ever gained real power.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats will always stand up for genuine free speech — which means defending the right of people to express views we may disagree with, and protecting a free press that can challenge those in power and keep our democracy healthy.”
