UK Steel Strategy Leaves Unanswered Questions for Wales
Responding to the UK Government’s Steel Strategy, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Wales David Chadwick MP said:
“It is welcome that the Government has finally acted, but this looks like a panicked move by a zombie government after months of delay.
"Since the blast furnaces were switched off, Welsh steel has been left on life support.
"With nearly 80% of UK steel exports going to the EU, it makes no sense that we remain outside a customs union with our biggest market, leaving us reacting to decisions we no longer shape.
"And while billions have been spent in Scunthorpe, it is still unclear how much of this funding will come to Wales, or whether UK steel will even be used in major projects like new nuclear in North Wales or offshore wind in the south.
"Welsh steelworkers deserve better.”
