This week in the Senedd, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have backed calls for a Wales-Specific Covid Inquiry.

Unlike the Scottish government, the Welsh Labour government are yet to establish a nation specific Covid inquiry to fully examine the decisions made before, during and after the pandemic.

The Welsh Lib Dems had previously called for a Welsh-specific inquiry in November 2022.

Commenting, the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said:

“We as a party wholeheartedly back call for a Wales-specific Covid inquiry.

It is vital that we hold the Welsh Government to account for the actions and decisions they made before, during and after the pandemic.

The Welsh government must understand the impact of their decisions by actively engaging with those who have lost so much because of the pandemic.

At the same time, we cannot lose sight of the devastating impact that the Covid pandemic has had on its victims and their bereaved families.

Too many precious lives were lost and too many families were shattered by the Covid pandemic, we cannot forget that.

Through my meetings with the campaign group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru, I came to understand that their call for a Welsh Public inquiry was not about finger pointing, but more about getting answers for those families who have suffered so much because of this terrible illness.

We cannot deny those still in mourning the right to closure.”
