Welsh Liberal Democrats highlight vital role of grassroots rugby amid uncertainty in the professional game
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have called on the Welsh Government to ensure that any changes at the top of the sport do not undermine the community game that is so essential to Wales.
Rugby plays a vital role in the health and wellbeing of communities across Wales. For many—especially young people—local rugby clubs are far more than places to play sport. They are community hubs where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and mental health is supported.
Speaking in the Senedd, Jane Dodds MS noted that at a time when Wales is rightly focusing on preventative healthcare and the importance of keeping people well rather than merely treating illness, the contribution of community sport cannot be overstated.
Grassroots clubs provide structure, belonging and positive activity that can make a real difference to people’s wellbeing. However, ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future structure of the professional game under the Welsh Rugby Union has raised serious concerns about the potential knock-on effects on local clubs.
The Welsh Liberal Democrats are urging Ministers to work closely with the WRU and local clubs to safeguard funding, ensure stability, and recognise the essential contribution that community sport makes to the nation’s wellbeing.
The Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, Jane Dodds MS, said:
“Rugby is woven into the fabric of our communities. Local clubs offer so much more than sport—they are lifelines for young people, places where confidence is nurtured, where friendships grow, and where mental health is supported.
At a time when we are prioritising preventative healthcare, community sport has never been more important. Yet the current uncertainty at the top of the game risks destabilising the grassroots clubs that are the beating heart of Welsh rugby.”
Welsh Liberal Democrat lead candidate for Gwyr Abertawe, Cllr Sam Bennett, said:
“The Welsh Government must step up and ensure that any change to the professional structure protects and strengthens the community game—not place it under further strain. Grassroots rugby deserves security, investment, and clear support for the vital role it plays across Wales.”
